Five Steps to Hire & Manage a Remote Creative Team [Infographic]

There are many project management advantages for building a remote creative team. Some of the benefits include a more efficient hiring process, saving money, minimizing work-travel stress, and having access to global talent.

Here are 5 steps for effectively hiring and managing a remote create team: 


Is it time to hire?

Quick employee turnover can result in a big overhead. Carefully assess if your current in-house team is frequently working overtime, are missing too many deadlines, or are quitting in droves.

If your workflow is too much and creativity is compromised then it might be time to consider hiring a remote team. This will open up the possibility of specialized talent working for particular projects.

Do we need freelancers or full-time staff?

Eighty percent of creative agencies employ freelancers for specialized skills, as well as for flexibility and project-based work. But if you find that you’re using freelancers for 20 to 30 hours on a weekly basis then it may be time to switch to full-time remote employees.

The flexibility freelancers offer is better suited for the seed phase of a startup company. The growth phase requires more dedicated employees to help your business thrive.

How do you recruit the best team?

The candidates for your remote creative team should have good communication skills, be self-motivated, and know how to manage their time. How do you get employees like these?

First, create an ad and post it online. Next, create a “We’re Hiring” feature or landing page on your site. When you get submissions, evaluate the applications carefully to see if they’re a good fit for your team. Then schedule a video interview and let the applicants perform a few test tasks. If they are a good fit, let them meet the rest of the team before making them an offer.

How do you get everyone on board with your process?

Once you’ve formed your remote creative team, it’s time to get them onboard your process and systems. First, you will need to establish communication protocols. One good method created by SingleGrain’s Eric Siu uses a stop-sign tiered system: a red alert means response is needed within an hour, a yellow alert requires response for the next couple of hours, and a green one can be responded to within the day (or two).

As a team, you will also need to implement collaboration tools. Then create an Internal Wiki so that everyone on the team understands the business jargon and uses them knowledgeably and with ease.

How do you motivate your team?

Motivation is key to good management of a remote creative team. It won’t be easy - you might have to deal with different time zones, temperaments, and other factors. However, if you keep everyone on the team updated via weekly “all hands on deck” meetings and establish annual or bi-annual vacations - you will be contributing to the emotional health and well-being of your remote team members.

One thing to avoid with your remote team? Micromanagement. Remote creatives value autonomy and do their best work when they are allowed room to breathe.
