Three Keys to Creative Project Collaboration

Not all project teams are built to be collaborative. Not all projects really require collaborative project teams. Now say that five times real fast. Certainly, a very short-term project that is fairly simple and laid out well isn't likely to require much ongoing team collaboration. They can probably make it work without the intricacies of incorporating collaborative PM tools and processes into the engagement.

However, a creative project of any significant length and complexity will likely be more successful if the creative project team is collaborating and communicating effectively throughout the creative project. Having said that, there are three keys to creative project collaboration on any creative engagement.

A cohesive team.

A team that's cohesive – especially if the members are already familiar with each other – will adapt to project collaboration policies a whole lot quicker. They will also be more likely to actually use the features of any collaborative project management tool you might be choosing to use (see next key on this list). They already know each other. They work well together and most likely, they have focused well as a team on previous project goals. No matter the circumstances, strong collaboration, whether it's inside or outside of an actual collaborative PM tool, is likely to happen with a creative team like this.

A collaborative PM tool.

When the creative agency team is using a collaborative management tool for their project engagement, it helps ensure that the project team remains on the same page throughout – even if some or all of the team are virtual… working remotely. With a good collaborative project management tool, there is less need for the project team members to be co-located. What this means is that you can have the top talent for your agency because you can use anyone around the globe, and still be successful. The reason for this is because your team is cohesive, communicative, and collaborating well throughout the creative project engagement. You can bring on experienced talent from anywhere and use them right now, no relocation needed.

 

A structure that promotes collaboration.

By this, I really mean processes, policies and templates. Ideally, there is a central repository of project templates and documents from past successful projects. There is no need to re-invent the wheel on every creative project. A knowledge database on which teams can collaborate and share files and documents is ideal to ongoing successes on similar types of projects.

Summary / Call for Input

Team collaboration is no guarantee to success on the creative project engagement. It does, however, make success more likely. In addition, there is a higher probability that the team (and client, if you open these features to them) will remain on the same page throughout the engagement. This common focus on project success and the project goals is essential to ongoing creative project successes.
