How to Manage Different Types of Retainer Agreements in Workamajig

Retainer vs. Fixed Fee — When to Use Each Billing Option
Agencies typically use Workamajig’s “retainer” billing when they don’t have an accurate estimate of their costs to service the client. There’s no set project budget; the agency negotiates a fixed recurring payment with the client, and then tracks the agreement’s profitability over time.
But, if you do have an accurate estimate of the costs to deliver your services, then you can use the “fixed fee” option. Our fixed fee project billing allows you to generate client invoices directly from a project based on its approved budget.
You can also break down fixed fee project budgets by:

Retainers in C&P allow an agency to bill a client before it incurs any costs. In other words, they’re a pre-payment for services that you’ll eventually bill the client for. The platform initially treats these billings as unearned income (a type of liability) in the general ledger — the funds are moved into the “revenue” as invoices are generated for services rendered to the client.
